Unconscious Child: How to Determine Breathing?
Imagine this: you walk into a room and your child is lying unconscious on the floor. What to do in this situation? Don't panic! Here's what you need to do:
- Ensure safety: Make sure the room is safe for both you and your child.
- Make sure the child is unconscious: Call their name and gently shake their shoulders. If there is no response, move on to the next step.
- Check breathing: Tilt the child's head back to prevent the tongue from blocking the airway. Check breathing in three ways:
- Listen with your ear close to their mouth.
- Feel the warmth of their breath on your cheek.
- Look for breathing movements in the abdomen or chest.
- Check breathing for 10 seconds. If at least one of the methods shows that the child is breathing, continue to monitor their condition.
Remember, first aid depends on whether the child is breathing:
- If breathing IS PRESENT, place them in a stable side position.
- If breathing IS NOT PRESENT, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Remember, these simple steps can save your child's life. Be prepared and know how to act if necessary.
